then and now..

what i had then, was there and was gone
what i had then, i knew it won't be for long
what i have now, is here and will be dear
what i have now, is here and it will be forever

what i had then, it had been
what i had then, it will be
what i have now, it has been
what i have now, it will be

what i had then, i had all
what i had then, i couldn't have all
what i have now, i have it all
what i have now, i couldn't have it at all

if then was now and now was then
if what was then what could have been
if it was then, if it will be
if i had it me it, i have it in me

my tribute : selamat hari guru

Ok selamat petang ye. Tajuk saya harini adalah berkenaan dengan teaching & learning.

I am an academician. And as academicians, sharing and dissimenating knowledge runs in our veins. My mother is now a penchant teacher, she still carries that teacher vibe. My dad used to be a teacher also, also carries the same vibe. And I followed their footsteps venturing in this field. MSO says that I am very patient, that's why I can become a lecturer (tapi adakalanya hilang jugak sabar or paling tak pun, rase nak cubit cubit je).

The places that I went to study contrued very positive teaching & learning experience. In elementary school, I cried when my standard 1 teacher, Mrs. Chong decided to leave the school. I felt a very big loss when our practical teacher, Ms. Aida, left us after she completed her training. The teachers who taught me is a part of MY teaching and learning process. and they have contributed to what I am today. In form 3, I remember I failed my history Mid Term test and teacher made me stand up in class and every body knew I failed the test. Yes, it has effected me so deeply (memalukan weh, dah la 15 years old, baru kenal erti puberty, peer pressure and all those teenage angst). But I studied really hard and I improved a lot. The embarrasment I had to bear resulted in getting straight As and landed me to a very good school. (Terima Kasih Cikgu)

In boarding school, I wasn't the smartest. I was a mediocre, in fact, sometimes I feel like I don't deserve to be in that school and it was just luck who had brought me there. Everybody studied like mad and wanted to be a doctor and score 4.00. they walked really fast cause nak kejar masa. And everyone would check on everyone else to see how much they have studied, and if they see me just chilling, they would think that I have studied and would be worried (I really hated that).

My addmaths teacher showed me that maths is very interesting and really easy to understand. and there's always a logic explanation to everything. My physics teacher shared that the subject is in fact a very intriguing phenomenon.. and that every action has an equal an opposite reaction. We had the best Chemistry teacher who always use different colors for different equations. and she will give us motivational quotes and read the do'a before lectures for Allah's blessing. My English teacher, Sir Kamil (Haris, aku tau ko sure tergelak terbahak bahak bila baca ni.. jahat la wei) He still remembers me when I go back to school. He's very genuine and loves to talk. He will talk and talk and talk and laugh by himself. But it had made the class enjoyable. Last but not least, my homeroom teacher. The one everybody feared most because he was the strictest. The one and only computer teacher, En. Fauzi. At 17, we learned a lot. Not just books, but also about life. (Terima Kasih Cikgu)

This is very mean, but I have erased most of the memories during my matriculations. It was when I hated chemistry, loved Physics, discovered Biology but became really bad at maths. (Terima Kasih Cikgu)

In university, we had THE BEST actuarial science lecturers. The coolest and mind blowingly smartest maths and statistics lecturers. They treated us like adults. When they teach, you can see that they are genuine and that they want you to learn.. and when they scold us, is not because of they want to feel great, but because it's for our own good..

But of course, the ones that had accepted me even when they know that I am average, I am truly grateful.

There's a saying in academics, "when you accept a student, you accept the responsibility of not only teaching but helping to shape a human being to be someone better in their future. and this responsibility is in your hands from the first day you see them. you might not see them again, but whatever that they practise of what you teach, you will be rewarded, insha Allah"

These people, inspired me to be a good lecturer / teacher..
I know it's abit late, I only had the time and feel to blog today..

TERIMA KASIH CIKGU.. Jasamu akan dikenang selalu. Tanpa tunjuk ajar dari cikgu, saya tidak akan berada di sini harini..

Selamat Hari Guru to all teachers / lecturers

my heartbeat

>> Tuesday, May 19, 2009

I am at home in front of my desktop listening to Jose Gonzales's Heartbeat. See, I have a very great imagination, and when I have a picture in my mind, it is very specific. The trees, the cars, the leaves, the surrounding.. everything..

Heartbeat... I am imagining being at a place, maybe a wide field at its 11 pm. A car (not my myvi but a very old BMW macam kereta perang warna hijau plat number like BA 33) parked at the wide empty field. The radio is on playing an oldie, The Platter's Blue Moon. I am just laying on the car amazed with the stars and the moon. The wind is blowing gently. I pull my blanket and wrap it on myself. I have a cup of coffee maybe next to me. (tiba tiba.. biar la its my imagination) and just talking and laughing and making silly jokes.. reminiscing the old times.. and thinking about the future.. how we will be in 10 years time.. thinking will we ever have the luxury of this freedom... independence.. or will we be like adults, tied down with responsibilities.. will we ever have this moment again.. to feel.. to be.. free... ?

perhaps just for a second.. perhaps just for one heartbeat.. i want to be like the kite. flying freely, proudly and beautifully in the open sky.. and someone will pull me down when the time comes for me to hit the ground..

this song.. took me there.. But maybe sometimes, when u take a trip to the atmosphere and sail across the sun and around the milky way, though is beautiful, you will realize that the real world is a much better place..

Lost In Translation

>> Monday, October 27, 2008

The ones who can communicate well are the ones who can convey the message to others as clear as possible. without having people asking "apa yg dia ckp?" . if more than one person asks the same question, that would mean the speaker did not convey the message clearly.

I went to a course yesterday and a speaker spoke of "kejelasan penjelasan". which made me laugh like a hyenna. heh heh.. interesting stuff.. even though towards the end, there were less than 25 people who stayed. lucky for me, i stayed till the end. not because i am skema or what, i feel that its unfair for people who has already worked hard for organizing the seminar, we should be thankful that we gained more knowledge through such events.

there's just one thing that bothers me though. i am right now, lost, in translation. i guess, most of the time i try so hard to be as clear as possible, that it becomes something that is so abstract and in the end, i myself get lost. really i do. so i have decided to be on hiatus on my thoughts and translations that got me lost at the first place. i wanna untangle the entangled bit and rationalize the irrational misconception concepts. "kejelasan penjelasan".

i remember things were much easier in the 80s. see. thats one of my flaws. i am still living in the past. and i look to far above and beyond. i don't really 'live' in the present. i admit that that is one of my weaknesses that took me to a turn into getting lost.. in translation.

no matter how clear you are, how certain you may be, you might just get lost somewhere in the middle.. somewhere through this journey. i tell my students.. those are called alpha.. or Type 1 error in hypothesis testing. see, in statistics, one powerful tool to analyze is using hypothesis testing when you make and assumption and allow a certain level of errors cause you are never 100% sure of your assumptions.

So what to do now? Is there evidence to Reject H null ?
Gosh, just for this one bit, i do not have the answer...

Sobani Iteyo

>> Wednesday, October 15, 2008

I wake up to the voice of Usher and Beyonce serenading me with In This Club (remix) every morning. Only this morning, i felt very weak and lazy to wake up but i have to.

I was on MC for two days due to fever and takdak suara. how to lecture ? I took the opportunity to rest and regain my energy since i had a hectic week last week.

The weekend was also hectic. On Saturday, we woke up early to go to Shah Alam for my cousin's engagement ceremony. (Congratulations Khaleefur!! if you're reading this). The day went on till night. Beraya sana sini, orang datang and stuff. Same goes for Sunday. Only that we went to KL area: Gombak and Selayang. and then head back home since people called saying they wanted to beraya kat rumah (Sorry Shazzain tak dapat gi open house umah ko sbb ada orang datang non stop).

I don't know if its me or what, but I want so much to have my long vacation. I'm listening to Long Vacation's Sobani Iteyo from the external hard disk that he gave me. Ada 15G of mp3s okay.. hehe and a downloaded collection of my favourite tv show 30rock and numb3rs :) thanks b.

I guess that's why i needed the 2 days mc.. to have my short vacation.. Hopefully I will get my long vacation again insyaAllah.. (bila la nak amek cuti lame lame ni...)

Now lagu Close to you, piano version played by Sena. Lovely piece. I played this during Burhanuddin Helmi's annual dinner in UKM in 2001. Sayangnya, the notes tak tau letak kat mana. And my piano is so out of tune. I am thinking of asking Uncle Nazri to tune my piano.. sbb susah pulak nak tune guitar if my piano is out of tune, kan?

I wanna be the old Dora again. I wanna write passionately, I wanna play music with feelings, I wanna smile when I see the sun, I wanna have my Long Vacation.. I wanna go to Redang one day and swim and go snorkling (spelling mcm ne ek) and see the underwater world.. I wanna go to Penang and eat by the beach. and take pictures of nature and people.

Sekarang lagu What Will I Do kat soundtrack Long Vacation ni.

I'm not really sure of the words to say
If only you knew that I feel this way
I wanna give my heart to you
Show me the way that you want me to
I know for sure there's a place for us
I'm counting the days 'till I feel your touch
You come to me when I dream at night
When I'm with you, it will be so right
If you can see the love in my eyes
You should know that I'm on your side
Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh
I'll be yours, you'll be mine
Ooh... What will I do? Ooh... What will I do?
Ooh... What will I do? Ooh... What will I do?
If you can see the love in my eyes
You should know that I'm on your side
Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh
I'll be yours, you'll be mine
Ooh... What will I do? Ooh... What will I do?
Ooh... What will I do? Ooh... What will I do

Sigh. I miss. I wish.

Betul! betul sangat meg!

The day started with my room mate saying "I just learned something yesterday.. ". see my room mate and I, we like to have conversations that are intellectual and mind stimulating.. and sometimes I like to splash in a little bit of gossip :p hehe.. tapi di hujung gossip itu selalunya ada some conclusion yang bole menyedarkan kita.

"I learned that you cannot push a guy to do something.. In fact, you cannot push anyone to do anything. If they wanna do it, has to be from them.. not when you push them."

"betul! betul sangat meg.."

I learned that the more you push people, the more that you are pushing them away. Guys especially. There's this unwritten rule about guys.. they need their own space.. see, i never really understood what kind of 'space' are they really referring to ? but i guess i am learning now and as you mix around with other people who are mature, you tend to develop that maturity as well.. and i learned that the 'space' that they were referring to is actually time.. time and space.. like in physics..

In physics, spacetime is any mathematical model that combines space and time into a single construct called the spacetime continuum. Spacetime is usually interpreted with space being three-dimensional and time playing the role of the fourth dimension. According to Euclidean space perception, the universe has three dimensions of space and one dimension of time. By combining space and time into a single manifold, physicists have significantly simplified a large number of physical theories, as well as described in a more uniform way the workings of the universe at both the supergalactic and subatomic levels.

In classical mechanics, the use of Euclidean space instead of spacetime is appropriate, as time is treated as universal and constant, being independent of the state of motion of an observer. In relativistic contexts, however, time cannot be separated from the three dimensions of space, because the rate at which time passes depends on an object's velocity relative to the speed of light and also the strength of intense gravitational fields which can slow the passage of time.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space-time

Being in a LDR for 3 years now, the time factor is very vital. we have a difference of 6 hours and both are busy chasing their dreams and career but at the same time we want to have that quality time together. so there are a lot of sacrifices that has to be made, understanding each other's situation and trust. Sacrifices has to be made out of sincerity and tidak diungkit later on. Understanding needs time and maturity.. and trust has to be gained. Even at 3 years, we are still learning about each other. I'd like to put it just like my quality assurance thingy, it's a life long learning experience.. for me, i appreciate knowledge.. even if my room mate is telling me about culturing bacteria called Rhoduccocus (tak sure spelling), I'd like to appreciate it even though sometimes I might not comprehend apekah sebenarnya Rhoducocus itu but it's Allah's gift for us and the fact that someone is experimenting it is somewhat amazing! a very small tiny bacteria means a whole lot to a person.. so I value the things that people share with me.. it's always interesting..

So back to my room mate's statement. Nodoby likes to be pushed to do something. That's why they tend to push it back further.. especially guys.. and sekeras keras hati lelaki, mereka lagi sukar untuk di-push to do something they do not want.. that's why when they dah lembut hati, you should appreciate it.. Ini semua kejadian Allah swt.. siapalah saya sebagai insan yang kerdil ini untuk meng-question people's heart.. (tiba2 mcm bunyi orang yang dalam movies who narrates the story.. hehe).. I sometimes a little bit of patience make a BIG difference.. :) I do not want to elaborate more on that.. because it is abit too personal for me..

I guess sometimes there are things that are private and personal I'd like to keep it to myself and only to the people who matters to me... the things that really matters are only for the people who matters to me.. you know who you are and what I mean :)

But when you do something that comes from the heart, and with the blessings of people who love and care about you, it becomes more meaningful.. and special.. Regardless of what other people say.. and these people do not know what your plans are or what you are going through.. sometimes they say it out of jealousy or just wanna just cucuk you.. I learned from my parents that you do what is best for you and not for others. I learned from my significant other, not to listen to others, just do what is right for you..

A reminder for me, my best friend Sheri (who will be flying off to Perth soon, gonna miss you babe.. don't listen to other people.. you want this.. and you will get this.. you have worked so hard for it.. and now the time is almost here.. I pray for your success there and hope to see you on D-day! hehe"
and for the best room mate ever, Meg.. (do not listen to others.. this is your dream.. go chase it! follow your instincts, believe in your destiny and fight for your dreams!)

I am thankful to Allah that I am blessed with my loving, the superbestest and supportive family, a loving, caring and understanding partner, lots of good friends who stood by me through thick and thin.. seriously.. It was Allah who had arranged the time and space for us to meet in this life..
and everything that happened .. just happened.. it was never planned and never pushed :)

ps: huggies for bb

my 'Morrie'

>> Friday, April 04, 2008

I'd like to start this post with this...

When you are in difficulty, think of Allah and He will guide you.. Without fail.

I sent a YM msg to Cikyah "I believe in the good". Yes i do. Miraculous things has happened to me this year. Alhamdulillah. and it's April already. Sometimes while driving to work i still think and talk to myself, gosh, is this for real? So i guess THE SECRET was right. if you believe what you want in life, you will get it.

I'm still reading Tuesdays with Morrie. Yup, i'm a slow reader. not because i have difficulty in reading, but i like to indulge and appreciate the words and meaning. i like to imagine and put myself in the book and get into the mood and sometimes play it in my head and really imagine.. the window, the little ray of sunlight through the dusty window, the dusts on the bookshelf, the grey hair, the briefcase, the doors, the garden, the automatic toyota camry, the dawn in winter, the wind with all those autumn leaves falling bit.. everything..

I had my Friday with my Morrie. what he shared with me was something i needed to hear.see, i am very average. i have always been average. my sister once told me that i am plain jane. indeed i am. my sister in law tells me that i am selambe bomba sampai bole gi kedai pakai pajamas je tak kisah pun. yup, that's right. when you've been surrounded by crem de la crem people, it kinda gives you this 'im an average joe' kinda feeling. where everyone walks fast cause their chasing time.. and everybody wants to be a doctor cause it's THE RIGHT THING TO DO.

I guess Morrie was right. We are too confined by the unwritten rules. If amek course ni, nnt senang ke dpt keje? Jadi la doctor, confirm dpt keje.. Engineers are smart people.. Work smart not hard.. all those kinda stuff.. those are myths that the society believes in.. the myths that were implanted in our heads because ITS SAFE and ITS THE RIGHT THING TO DO. the truth is, some medical students don't even dream of becoming doctors.. they want to become astronauts nowadays.. and perhaps do some modeling and open a restaurant in bangsar one day.. and another thing, engineers are NOT the only ones who are smart.. and being smart doesn't necessarily mean they will succeed in life if they are not hardworking.

Morrie told me, "I said to my supervisor.. came here to work hard.. there are times when i am slow.. there are times when i am fast.. but give me time.. as long as i am moving.. i know i will reach my destination"

He also said "don't be afraid.. when you read and you don't understand its normal.. sometimes you read 10 times and you still don't understand is also normal.. but don't ever give up.. as long as you keep on moving.. you will eventually get there.. don't be afraid to bend the rules and think the unthinkable.. you can create your own rule through exploring and experience... don't ever feel that what you've contributed is little.. because sometimes what you've done could mean so much to someone else.. so don't be afraid of trying...and never ever give up"

As I listened to Morrie's advise, it felt as though what he shared was really deep. What he said was something an average joe or a plain jane needed to hear.. It felt like I was recharging my positive energies and it kinda brought me back to Positive-Land. I guess that's one of the life's greatest lesson a student needs learn..

Thanks Morrie for the advise. I hope we can meet again one day and perhaps, I can share with him my journey in reaching my own destiny..

The poem i found here

Magician Magician
take me upon your wings and
gently roll the clouds away

I want to count to five
turn around and find myself gone
Fly through the storm
and wake up in the calm

I want some magic to sweep me away
I want some magic to sweep me away...
