my first Montag in Mannheim (monday in mannheim)

>> Monday, June 29, 2009

German word of the day is Anmelden, means, Sign In.

Yes, i figured it out here cause everthing is in German. The google.com.de instead of google.com.my, the keyboard (I am still having a hard time finding the DEL, CTRL and SHIFT key and sometimes confuse the Y and the Z and they have this ß, ö, ä, ü). I had a hard time installing JAVA cause everything was in german.. It took me awhile to take out $ from the ATM machine cause Ikhwan had to assist me, the tv channels are all in German except CNN.. even the instructions to the curry powder are in german :) hehe I laughed and thought gosh, Guten Tag, Danke and bitte schön are just nanobytes of the German language.. and I really wanna learn more now :) it's exciting!

It's amazing. Living in a foreign land, with a foreign language and everything else is foreign except your other half who understands what your saying.. I still sometimes pinch myself (literally). Alhamdulillah..

We still have a bit of jet lagged, and sometimes the occassional homesick kicks in. But thanks to Ikhwan's Voipstunt, I call home on average 2 times a day to check on Mama Papa and sometimes ask Mama on how to cook curry or to manage kitchen things (which I am learning very hard now). No complaints from Ikhwan so far. And knowing him, he doesn't complain. Now that I am staying with him and understanding his life over here, I learned why he doesn't complain. This experience opened my eyes on how we should really be thankful with what we have. And Alhamdulillah.. Things could be worse.. But Allah is generous to bless us with what we have now. I am not just saying it because he is my husband and the bunga bunga cinta talk, I know him for how many years, though through very distant but we talk a lot and we understand and trust each other. People who know him knows that he doesn't complain. That's just Ikhwan. One of the many reasons why I love him.

Yes, married life in a foreign land. I am still coping and learning. Sometimes I feel like it's orientation when he shows me how to use the coffee machine, how to do the laundry, or showing me around places or what to do when what happens. Hehe. There are times that I feel like a freaking Asean tourist (which I am apparently) with 1 DSLR camera and a very good compact camera with 2 batteries (yes I know I am a freak). I get that occassional weird look which I am starting to get used to. I am loving every German thing and I will say, 'Omigod, that is sooooo German!!!' and of course he will roll his eyes and shake his head.. hehehe..

People will ask me, 'how's married life?' (usually the ones who are married) and me being naive will tell them what I feel. Some will give advices, some will just grin and give me they 'yeah this is only the beginning' look. It's hard to comprehend what people have in their minds when they throw me those questions. Are they just waiting to rub it in to my face ? Are they genuinely happy for me ? Are they waiting for me to give them an answer that they really wanna hear ? Honestly, I think that people should not ask someone on how's their marriage life is like. Because in Islam, and to me, personally, I feel that it's very personal. And I believe that whatever a person share with their other half is only between the two of them.

So yes, it's been a few weeks. And I don't know much about this new life but give me a chance to explore and learn and experience. And I think the best of people to give advice to us are our parents. Because they raised us from day one. They are the ones who know us, our actions, the way we think and the way we handle any situation. and the best part is.. They have never asked us 'how's married life?' because I know at every prayer, they pray for us.. Thanks Mama, Papa, Mak and Ayah :)

I know I promised a lot of pictures but give me time to edit it first ok.. Cikyah shared with me a very interesting lesson in photography she learned from Sifu Foo, 'there's always a story to be told in every picture. You must concentrate and think very hard on what story you want to tell and click with your heart'

what's the story behind this picture ?

Bis später! Auf Wieder sehen people :)

my friday night : my friday morning story

>> Monday, April 06, 2009

Being at home and not being able to do anything except for walking a little and disturbing my other friends at work by SMSing them using my 800 free SMSes from my 2nd line, Hotlink, sometimes can be quite a bore. Just for this time, I cannot do my funky dance everytime I get an MC from a doctor. Reason : I just can't move. Reason : I fell down dalam keadaan tidak sedar. Result : A very bad backache.

The last few days has been terrible for me and I guess it was really some sort of dugaan kot. Imagine you lying down on the bed and your handphone rings and you can't reach it even though it's like 10 cm away. Imagine not being able to take a loo without having to call someone (my mother is the best) to carry you to the toilet. Imagine not being able to go to work when you are mentally and emotionally healthy but physically unhealthy. Imagine not being able to drive your car or reaching for the remote control. All you're able to do is just lay down and listen to MP3? Nak baca buku pun lenguh tangan lame lame.. Well, that was what I experienced for the past few days.

Sememangnya setiap orang itu diduga dengan macam - macam ujian. But after all that has happened, I believe Allah is protecting me. Everything happened for a reason. And this happened was for a reason. A reason that only myself will know one day. Thanks to everyone who had prayed for me, my beloved family members, my super cool friends, my wonderful students and mind blowing fellow bloggers..

my 2 days of MC

>> Tuesday, February 17, 2009

Monday 2am. I suddenly woke up feeling a terrible stomach ache (aduh). The whole family has been having stomach aches and it was weird that I didn't get it.

"Perut Dora kebal kot". Tu la cakap besar lagi. Amek kau..

That had resulted in me getting 2 days of MC from Dr. Murali from Klinic Rakyat SS 3. Although Monday morning I really wanted to go to work (terbayangkan muka budak2 yang excited nak ambik quiz. I promised to give them quiz on Monday) I had my working attire on even my hijab skali dah ambil kunci kereta dah. It was 8am and if I drive, I'll reach there at 9am at least but there's a big possibility that I might feel like vomitting and going to the toilet every now and then..

"But I promised I'd give them a quiz today. Takpe la I'll drive to Btg Berjuntai kot.."

"Which is more important? Quiz or ur health?" my dad's statement left me thinking for half a minute and made me crawl back to bed feeling all sick and painful. See, when I am sick, I am really really sick. Tahap dewa.

So I received a lot of phone calls and text msgs from people who wanted to see me and looking around for me. Suddenly I felt important when the Deputy Dean called me (a rare occassion).

Today I feel a lot better. At least I can get out from my bed and walk around the house and blog too sikit sikit. Of course I still feel loya and nak muntah and everything else. But not as bad as yesterday. The call from House left me feeling nauseous again after giving me a task that I still wonder at this moment, "why me?"

So, lesson learned : Where I work, being vocal and extrovert is NOT necessarily a good thing.

my Sharona and hopefully not lost in translation

>> Monday, January 12, 2009

I couldnt help but bop my head to the beat of Ma ma ma myyyy sharona on Red 104.9 on the way back from work. The drivers from the opposite side saw me and suddenly bopped their heads too (I know, it sounds so like a Ben Stiller movie or some 30rock episode but that really happened, seriously..).

The day started with a gasp (takut lambat) and a smile (sebab belum lambat.. lagi..). The usual salam ritual with my parents for blessings and I was off to work. I wanted to make today a kick a** day. so I was hyped up with a lot of positive energy around. The morning class with the degree students was alright. Teaching 15 students in a class is manageable (when 14 of them are female students.. and I was singing Paula Cole's where have all the cowboys gone?).

After class, I was approached by a some sort of a Sabahan student who wanted to see me personally for some personal reason. After hearing his story, I said it was okay to enter my class. See, he has a low grade point average and judging from the way he speaks, I guess he is a changed person and is willing to work hard. As long as he has the will, I will too try my best to help him.

The interesting part of the day started in the afternoon with my foundation students. For this semester, I have 6 foundation students consist of 3 Malays, 2 Indians and 1 Chinese. Very muhibbah. I have even planned for them a treasure hunt or some sort of Explorace as one of their assignments. But as I entered the class today, on top of my Muhibbah students, I saw 3 international students. I thought I was in the wrong class. so I stepped out of the class for abit and later on realized that WAS my class. Ok, so no big deal. just 3 Sudanese students. So I had a brief ice breaking session with them and then came another 2. It felt really international when 3 other Sudanese joined the class. Turns out all of them changed courses so that they had to take Statistics.

I have to say, I enjoyed today's class. It was some experience. Studying with international students is very much different as to teaching them. They might get lost in translation. However, I could see that they concentrated in class and were really active compared to our local students. They even made casual jokes with me and actually understood MY jokes :) [ok, you should understand that it is very difficult to crack a joke with students without being offensive but friendly yet accepted and proper ones] And suddenly, from being very much muhibbah, we were very much international.. They also mananged to guess my age right (darn it).

After explaining to them. I asked, "Fahim tum?" and they answered "fahim tum" kot?
And again I asked "la musykil ?" So they figured, I could speak arabic (thanks to my dad's perseverance in studying Arabic, I can throw a couple of phrases). And one of them started to speak Arabic to me.. And I confidently nodded while saying "Na'am.. na'am"
I could see that he figured I was just saying that when I saw him turning to his friend and said something with a question mark kinda tone. And by the looks of his gestures, I think he said "did she understand what I was saying?" ahahaha... And apparently my name is a precious stone or pearl in Arabic if pronounced Durrah.. How cool is that ?

At the end of the class, one of them came up to me and said,
"Very nice lecture. Thank you Miss". No amount of bonuses or part time income could compete the feeling of having a student saying that to you. Indeed very rewarding. It may be a simple phrase but it means a lot to a person. And sometimes you might see your lecturers make that straight face but deep down inside, you have no idea how you make his/her day by saying that. I guess it goes the same way if you express your gratitude to someone. It makes them feel appreciated. So I resolve to say Thank you and mean it more often now :)

Perhaps what I was thinking in my head earlier while driving to work was right. Life is journey. You never know what's ahead of you. You can prepare yourself. Sometimes when you take a turn, you hope for no bumps and no jams. But even when you endure a jam and or bumps, you can always enjoy the journey with some great songs to make you feel happy, wonderful thoughts and never the least, prayers to keep you safe, Insya Allah.

Wish me luck for my challenging challenge this semester.. again.. The class was fun and I hope to maintain that environment for the whole semester and for as long as I am in this industry, InsyaAllah.. Guess I'm gonna have to add up Arabic on top of German language now.. hehehe I enjoy learning languages :)

Winona Ryder, her haircut and everything else in Reality Bites is just so cool.. Enjoy Ma ma ma my sharona.. this had resulted in me bopping my head for about a minute.. you might bop to it too hehe

If the shoe fits..

>> Sunday, January 04, 2009

Yes. I did wake up quite early this morning. At 10am, while most people had just opened their eyes or still having breakfast, I was already on my way to The Gardens. I like to get up early and shop, early bird catches the worm. So I got myself a nice parking space right opposite the entrance and I thought, "this is gonna be a lovely day". So I headed to Isetan. My friend, Rizleen told me the shoes there are not bad and I had high hopes of getting myself at least one pair. I had my focus. ONLY shoes, no handbags (I bought a nice one in Singapore for a good deal).

Finding THE PERFECT SHOE is like finding THE PERFECT MAN. You have to click with it, be able to walk around with it, feel comfortable, and look good in it. I have the average Size 5 asean feet so I have to compete with the others. And knowing that today is the last day of Savings SALE, I didn't have much time.

I stumbled upon THE PERFECT SHOE at Bonia. Closed shoe, gold = price RM 399 with 50% discount. In fact, I found 2 pairs. I wanted to jump up and down and do my boogie dance because I have searched high and low for THE PERFECT SHOE (I found one in Singapore, tapi tak menyingkap jiwa, you know wat I mean?). I tried it and aaah.. PERFECT, so I asked the Salesgirl, "ada size 37 tak?"

Guess what... It was out of stock :( I could actually hear my heart being crushed (bunyik kaca) sigh~~ I called almost everybody I could think of to help me out to find this Bonia shoes. So I walked to Midvalley, none. And to Robinsons, none. Bonia shop pun none.

Nak menyedihkan lagi cerita, I also went to Dockers. I saw the sweater that I have been eyeing on.. dah le RM 178.00, apa lagi, angkat la.. But I guess, my day was just not that lucky, "size M dah habis kak" sigh..

Masih tak puas hati. I drove to Subang Parade and I said to myself, this is it la.. kalau takde, memang tak ditakdirkan to get the shoes and the sweater.. Unfortunately, still no luck...

Guess I'll just have to wait for another Mega sale.. Or perhaps I'll have better luck next time..

I came back with a 100g of Famous Amos, a working Bonia shoes brown color (not bad la), a broken heart with a back ache and an empty stomach.. I guess this early bird did not catch the worm :(

Lesson : Next time sale, go on the first day, especially when you wanna shop for shoes.. If only the shoe fits.....

moral of the story : jgn curi parking org or main honk2

>> Friday, December 12, 2008

What's cool about working where I work (although its damn far) is that when Selangor cuti, we all pun cuti. So yesterday, we had our 1 day cuti and to those who wants a long weekend would take today off. or who would want the whole week off, took Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday off (like most people in my office, that's why I am alone here).

So I took the opportunity to settle my errands (actually most of my errands dah settle tggal satu ni jer). I went to the post office near Petronas TTDI , dekat2 Persiaran Maarof tu (the nearest post office to PJ that was open sbb KL area). It took me quite some time to locate a parking space. Since the post office is situated near Petronas, semua orang nak park kat Petronas. After making 3 rounds (lalu Maybank belah kanan, Secret Recipe, pusing at KFC and passby Santai), I finally saw a parking space betul2 in front of the post office entrace.

Yes!

And at the very moment I wanted to flick my right hand to make a signal, suddenly out of no where, a red proton saga dengan penuh selamba zaaasss took my parking space while giving me that ko pehal??? look. (tanda ??? kena repeat 3kali for attitude)

OMG!! WTF??

I was dumbfounded. flabbergasted. perplexed. astounded. semua lah. in simple words, terkedu because some idiot just took my parking space.

and during that 3 seconds of terkejutness, a lady who had a mix-mat salleh look driving a dark blue 5 series BMW gave me a honk that made me jump a little sambil melatah, OH mak ngkau!. She also gave me that Oi cepat la sket!!! look. (tanda !!! kena repeat 3kali for attitude jugak)

Damn you woman! baru je 3 saat. sabar la. orang nak masuk gear 1 ni. but probably it felt like 3 hours to her, looking at the the way she was driving, mcm tengah kejar something jer, kejar masa kot.

So, ok la. in my heart I was saying this Sabar Dora sabar. But in actual fact i was cursing away. Finally I decided to park my car kat depan rumah2 by Persiaran Maarof. Saman kena ke tak? Gamble la.. lagi pun bukannya lama pun (so I thought).

I walked to the post office about 253 steps from my parking space (i have really small steps) and I saw a lot of people hanging out by the door.

MasyaAllah punya lah ramai orang! So I pressed "A" for Kaunter Pelbagai and look at my number.

Your number is 1252.
The current number is 1162.
Please take a seat and we will attend to you shortly. (90 org beza? shortly, you say?)

Hm, take a seat ? where? the post office was packed with all walks of people. tua, muda, bertongkat, people with really cool pda phones, girls with sunglasses (must be hot in the post office), oh and yes.. I saw the guy who took my parking space (wah syoknya dpt tempat duduk) and the BMW lady who honked at me (constantly looking at her watch, probably a Rolex, ye, ada ciri2 mengejar masa).

Sigh. I saw an empty seat at the very front row in front of Kaunter Pelbagai 2 (for some reason, people rather stand than sitting at the front row).

Ting. Satu Satu Enam Tiga (1163).

Yeay, lagi 89 orang to go! hmm... I sat holding my handbag and looked at the counters anxiously. Nape la tak bawak something to read. At that moment I was hungry (as always), perplexed, anxious and just bored. I didn't wanna look like some girl waiting for another 89 people before her turn, so I buat2 busy dengan mengeluarkan my pink Motorola Razr and text Din.

Nape la pos ofis kat ttdi ni ramai sgt? lagi 90 org.. mane2 aku gi ramai org.

Suddenly I remembered, I had that German for Dummies book I carry in my bag since forever. So I took it out and tried to kill my time reading it. I finished a page and then
Ting. I quickly look at my number and heard the words saying Satu Satu Enam Empat (1164). Sigh..

Suddenly, I realized that I needed to fill the form to take the rebate, so I asked around and took the form and head back to my seat and started to fill it up. As I was taking my time slowly writing, a lady about late 50s (LAL 50) who looked like a pension high school teacher probably taught BM or English asked me,

LAL 50 : Dik, semua orang ambik borang apa tu?

Dora : Borang untuk Road Tax rebate makcik. Kena isi borang sebelum nak dapat rebate tu Makcik.

LAL 50 : Oh really.. We missed it. My car is dued in March, dia boleh start claim if your car is dued in April kan ?

Dora : ye makcik

LAL 50 : Tu la so I have to wait for the next one (gelak kecil..)

Dora: ooo ye ke.. hehe.. kena tunggu la.. tapi next year pun tak lama lagi.. it's end of 2008 already :)

So after having small chats with LAL 50 which was friendly, she said to me,

LAL 50 : Dik, I kesian tgk no u, lame lagi kan ? I think that would take another hour or so.. I tell you what, I'm just paying some ASTRO bills, why don't u tumpang je la my number skali.. you help me pay for my bills and then you settle kan la ur road tax rebate, i tggu sini.. my number lagi 10 org je...

Dora : (Baiknya makcik ni! alhamdulillah) yer ker makcik? oooo okay... thanks a lot (sambil senyum lebar dan lega)

Not long after that, her number came up and I paid her bills while she sat at her place, I gave her her receipts and thanked her again. Then I got my rebate. yeay!

As I walked out, I saw the guy who took my parking space and the BMW lady, I walked near the guy and said, "you nak nombor saya ke ? saya dah habis.. " he showed me his number with a ha enes poyonyer kau.. (kali ni dia ckp ada ... sbb intonasi malu tapi ego) "ooh nombor u lagi awal.. takpe lah i bagi orang lain (senyum sinis) " and i did the same to the BMW lady.. and finally I gave it to an old Chinese guy who looked like he really wanted an earlier number..

At that moment, I became RM625 richer, happy and no longer dumbfounded. [terima kasih LAL 50.. i never knew her name.. nice lady though]

Moral of the story, sila jangan curi parking org.. or honk sbb nak kejar masa..

Apakah perasaan seorang guru?

Starts : 1025 PM

Someone once said to me, "Live your life without any regrets".

When I was much younger (mcm dh lame jer hehe), biasalah, budak2 mmg nakal sikit. Sikit jer. I like to try new things (konon experiment) and just break the rules (abit) once in a while (biasalah kot). So, when my students do crazy stuff or just trying to be the young ones they are right now, I kinda know some of their tricks (been there, done that).

However, I do not regret how I lead my life. I am what I am today because of what I was yesterday. So, alhamdulillah. Whatever mistakes I have done before is a lesson for me to learn, probably some bad experiences, or unwise decisions, I have dealt with and learned to live with it. I have never blamed anyone for what had happened to me.

Why this sudden post? See, I am working as an academician. And as an academician, I deal with a lot of people. And most people might say that my work is easy because I just teach. See, that is where people who assume that are wrong. I do not JUST teach, I believe that my responsibility goes beyond that. I am responsible to shape a person, academically. and I believe that I take my job very seriously. I have been a lecturer for about a modest 1 year and 3 months to be precise. And as far as I can remember, I have never regretted venturing in this line.

I always tell my students. "Please, do as I tell you. Don't have any regrets when you see your marks. Don't blame others for what you are responsible for. You have a big responsibility, to learn. and my responsibility is to teach and to guide you. So I take this big task seriously. and I hope you do too." Some take it seriously. Some just don't bother. Some want to but just do not have the strong willpower to do so. Whatever it is, I hope that my students will not have any regrets.

"If only I studied harder"
"If only I submitted my assignments"
"If only I paid attention in class"
"If only.... "

I remind my students and myself as well and the fellow readers.. Please.. have no regrets.. just live your life.. or just.. embrace life.. and just live.. Cause your life is a too precious and a beautiful gift for you to waste..

Please throw away all your regrets.. your negative vibes.. your anger.. your hatred.. your jealousies.. your sadness..

Wouldn't it be a waste if one day you wake up and you realized that all your life has been filled with all those feelings.. and you are old and have lived your life but was never happy.. never vibrant and never lived? Sayang kan ?

PAKU

>> Monday, November 17, 2008

I got this email from a friend and i thought it was very well said... Listen to the moral of the story.. maybe we could all learn from it...

Ada seorang pemuda yang sangat pemarah. Dia tidak dapat mengawal
kemarahannya walaupun ianya hanya satu masalah kecil sahaja. Pada suatu
hari, bapanya telah menghadiahkannya dengan seguni paku. "Untuk apakah
paku-paku ini ayah?" tanya pemuda tersebut. "Setiap kali kamu marah,

anda....

save the pendrive, save the world

>> Thursday, May 15, 2008

I read on my colleague's Skype status : "save the pendrive, save the world". A story about pendrive, my room mate recently misplaced her pendrive and yesterday SMSed me when she found it at the most unexpected place.

What got me to write this entry is that it got me thinking about how bizzare it is that anything that is almost everything can be kept in such a small device.. a pendrive. Just like what Azman said, "save the pendrive, save the world".. perhaps, my room mate's world was saved when she was united with her pendrive..

A story to share, I twisted my ankle... again, today at our PKP. Left leg this time.. only that it wasn't as bad compared to last time..

Another story to share, a student came over and asked for his paper to be remarked. He failed and his CGPA dropped to less than 2.00. Now he can't get PTPTN loan for this semester. So he asked me nicely if I could help him out.. Predicament, predicament.. We followed the procedure. He had to pay some amount of $ for his paper to be rechecked, only to find out that his marks were lower but the grade didn't change. So when I called him to tell him the news, he was begging me and telling me that he is orang susah, mak dia tak sehat, nak sponsor adik, ayah dia pencen..

As a human being, I felt his pain and problem. As a lecturer who tries to think straightly and logically, I thought, well, if he really is an orang susah as he claimed, perhaps, he should've struggled for his finals. Nak citer, orang susah, ada orang lain lagi susah bole jer score..

I don't know, is it my fault ? Did I not teach well ? He never came and see me and talked about his problems. He never came for consultation. How far can a teacher do to teach ? How far will a student go to succeed in their studies ?

Looking at his results he got C, C+,C- somewhere around there.. Was it me who did not do my job ? I guess even if I have saved his results in my pendrive, I can never really save someone else's world...

Here's to a Happy Teacher's Day

Lesson Learned #1

>> Tuesday, April 29, 2008

After many sleepless nights and feeling worried and everything related to that feeling, with the help of my Dean, my Dean's PA, we managed to persuade the Registrar to reactivate the system to rectify my problem. Apparently, I wasn't the only one who experienced this. However, we were the ones who met personally with the one in charge and waited till she said, "Ok, jalan."

Oh well, i guess it all comes back to how serious you are with your work. The one you earn money with. And with that money you give back to your parents and buy food and becomes your flesh and blood. I'm not saying I am an angel (ni selalu ayat my room mate hehe), but at least when we are appointed to do something, do it. Even if it goes wrong, be accountable for your actions and admit it's your mistake. Cause I learned that if you are honest, people can see your honesty. Biar pun kena tengking or maki hamun. At least you are transparent.

So a big lesson for me... check, recheck and check again..
